The foreign and Me

In the field of tension between ‘home’ and ‘foreign’ people have always been looking for new inspirations for social life and their work, because perception opens up through the new impressions of a foreign environment and new ideas and imaginations arise far away from everyday life.

Often the foreign is determined by travelling to other, foreign countries, but even the big city offers a variety of strange situations that we can encounter as soon as we leave our familiar surroundings or actively engage with people who bring something ‘foreign’ to us. In the workshop we concentrate on developing artistic ideas that use the desire for the foreign environment, /the stranger as a source of inspiration.

The aim is to fundamentally deal with the theme of the “foreign” and “other” that one can encounter everywhere and to enter into a productive dialogue. To rub against the foreign, to mirror oneself, to separate or open oneself.
How does the foreign affect me? What does it trigger in me and what previous experiences can I build on? Does it make me curious or does it scare me? Do I delimit myself or do I open myself?

Horizons

“Horizons” is an interactive workshop aimed at participants with and without disabilities, who use their creativity to learn how to explore and shift their own and their neighbours’ boundaries and thus broaden their horizons. The target group are young people up to 26 years of age who wanted to open themselves to new experiences and at the same time turn their attention inwards to discover unknown inner landscapes and thus make their life and work with others more imaginative.

Hand in Hand

The image is still widespread in society: “People with disabilities are a burden to society. We have to understand that for a healthy community, people with disabilities are also important. They broaden our horizons and teach us things that we quickly forget in the hectic of everyday life.

We have to learn from each other. People with disabilities can also help other people, be a friend to so-called non-disabled people. How can this look like? What makes friendship? What can a person without a disability learn from a friend with disabilities? What is the added value?

A performance will explore these questions. Roland Walter himself is spastically paralyzed and works as a performer and inclusion ambassador. He has experience of how to be a friend to non-disabled people. Together with a dancer, Walter would like to develop and perform a performance “hand in hand”. In doing so, different facets of friendship should be shown. In the second part Roland Walter (Germany) and Yanel Barbeito (Cuba) offer a conversation. The participants will exchange their experiences. It should be conveyed that people with disabilities are an enrichment. Barbeito is also spastic paralyzed. Barbeito and Walter evaluate the experiences of the participants.

Küra – Exchange between disabled and non-disabled people

Inclusion. The Küra will provide an opportunity for exchange between disabled and non-disabled people – both among artists and between artists and the public or within the public.

 

In this way we want to break down fears of contact and build community. The Küra team is convinced that creativity in community and exchange touches people and draws wide circles of awareness. 3 to 4 disabled or non-disabled artists* are invited to present their performances of up to 20 minutes in a professional atmosphere.

The evening, which will be moderated, will be translated live by a sign language interpreter into an appropriate medium for people with hearing disabilities and visually impaired people.

The art aspects kunstverein was founded by members of the VON ERLENBACH KUNSTSCHULE. In the art school young people prepare themselves for the admission for an artistic study. In 15 years, more than 500 people have prepared a portfolio, been admitted to study and have studied. Many of them have already completed their studies. And many of the graduates are wondering what will happen after their studies.

In our workshops “…and then”, we look upon questions of what an artistic career could look like, what opportunities there are on the job market with an artistic education. We investigate in discussions and practical exercises and with guests (artists, curators, galerists)

Project description_Choreografien des Öffentlichen / Coreografías de lo urbano

Choreographien des Öffentlichen/Coreografías de lo urbano will be produced by the temporary ensemble Plasticity and in cooperation with the Humboldt association(Goethe Institute Ecuador), MAE(Archive Museum for Architecture Ecuador (Quito) and FeldFünf (Berlin) and will take place in Quito, Ecuador (March and April 2019) and Berlin, Germany (August and September 2019)
Choreographien des Öffentlichen/Coreografías de lo urbano is a transcultural and interdisciplinary project that studies and investigates the multi-layered interactions that exist between public spaces and individuals. By working on three different performance duos that are going to be presented as performative`space tours ́:`Diverse Bodies, diverse Buildings ́, `Common Places, Meeting Grounds ́and `Bodies, Cities and Archives ́, the main objectives of this project are to critically reflect on and open up questions related to accessibility, historicity, post-colonialism and gentrification. Through examining the porousness and plasticity of/between bodies and public spaces, this project ultimately aims for an aware and open use of public spaces that facilitates participation and exchange through artistic productions. A key component of this project is to work with a mixed-abled and transnational ensemble that interweaves dance, theatre, and anthropology in order to voice the various layers, perspectives and complexities of the thematic. The team is constituted by three core members: Tamiana Naranjo, Lilly Pöhlmann and Josefin Pöhlmann. Two invited guests Roland Walter and Juan Lautaro Veneziale and another 4 local artists that join one phase only. The questions of how to consciously choreograph experiences in public spaces and in which ways this spaces (defined shapes) influence and/or configuarte bodies, started a dialogue between the involved artists and led them to find adequate partners in Quito and Berlin that are equally interested to start a long term research on this topic. An international cooperation is crucial for this production, as working with a mixed abled and transnational ensemble will open spaces where the `inner ́ and `outer ́ are questioned and binary oppositions are not taken for granted: new perspectives will emerge. This artistic project is a sustainable way of questioning the use and accessibility of public spaces and will open new ways of perceiving the so called `nature of places ́. Its high artistic and social value becomes evident through working with diverse bodies, site-specific venues, new cooperation’s and relevant topics that affect bodies on every day basis. Complementing the production of Choregraphien des Öffentlichen/Coreografías de lo urbano, four workshops will be offered by the core artistic team in Quito and Berlin respectively. These workshops are free of charge and open for everybody. Besides enriching the artistic process this format of sharing knowledge mainly aims for a direct dialogue and exchange with local residents and artists. This research is based on the `tour guide ́: a product and experience that is purchased and consumed. This choreographed experience is mostly designed for foreigners that `sells ́ a unique experience of the architectonic masterpieces, the `true ́ heart(s) of the city and its history, which indeed defines the cities particularities. Besides an immense variation on price and group size the services are also vast: mainstream-, alternative-, `not-normative ́-, art-, underground-, migration-and colonial history tours -`all’ topics are covered. The one thing in common: the promise of an eventful and personal experience in the foreign city. This project aims to uncover this choreography and critically discuss the form of interaction between bodies and spaces. Through working with a new framing this project aspires to destabilize the everyday choreographies, show real or/and imagined boundaries, question normative ways of using public spaces and reveal `myths ́ of the day to day. The three performative `space tours’are going to be created in close relationship with following neighbourhoods: San Marcos (MAE), Cruz Tobar and Iñaquito (Humboldt Association) and southern Friedrichstadt (Feldfünf). On one hand we will work with the subjective space experience and practices of each artist and on the other hand with the dramaturgy of the tour guide itself. Each performative `space tour’ will be lead by a different artist duo. Performances__Diverse Bodies, Diverse Buildings: Are there imagined or real boundaries in public spaces that we cannot or will not pass? Where do we find porousness, accessibility and openness? Is the idea of a complete accessible city an utopic one? Centre of research_Humboldt association (Quito), feldfünf (Berlin) Mediums_ sound, dance and architecture_Common Places, Meeting Grounds: Which places invite us to stay? How do these spaces voice the logic of consumerism, materialism or post materialism? Do places of leisure and gathering have an agency? Is the shopping mall the contemporary church? Centre of research_ Humboldt association (Quito), feldfünf (Berlin). Mediums_ text, dance_Bodies, Cities and Archives: How does the history of a places affect the way we move in them? How does the colonial architecture in Quito and the effects of gentrification in Berlin define the way we move and act? In which aspect do this topics merge?Which stories are told/not told about this streets and squares? Which stories do we not want to listen to? Centre of research_ MAE (Quito), feldfünf (Berlin). Mediums_ architecture, theatre, dance Diverse Bodies, Diverse Buildings and Common Places, Meeting Grounds will be presented at the Humboldt association and feldfünf and Bodies, Cities and Archives will be presented at the MAE and feldfünf. Furthermore, the MAE is interested in exposing a final documentation of the artistic process of the whole production at the end of each phase (Quito and Berlin).

Together with the association art aspects and promoted by Aktion Mensch, the movement workshop “Deviation” takes place in the last week of July.

How does the city’s architecture determine the way we move and act in it? When do we voluntarily give up / leave, and when does the city force us to avoid or avoid it?

Starting from different artistic forms of expression and tasks, we want to roam parallel existing public spheres together, ask the question of their borderlines and deal with their permeability.

Through dance and theater exercises, we will explore body and space together and sharpen our auditory, tactile and visual perceptions.

We want to make the differences, deviations, diversions dance and constantly keep moving.

It works both in the studio and in public spaces. Above all, the work in the studio should serve the participants in various approaches to movement, text and drama to allow them to deal with the urban spaces. With this prerequisite, manifestations and excursions in public spaces are then designed and tested. The focus is on the dialogue and reflection of one’s own perceptions and experiences, as well as a common search for movement that will lead to a showing at the end of the week.

OUT IN THE FIELDS_UTOPIA SYMPOSIUM 2018

With the UTOPIA SYMPOSIUM 2018- OUT ON THE FIELDS, we continue the UTOPIA – series that started 2013  as an international Symposium of the Arts for artistic exchange and international cooperation on Lanzarote. This year the UTOPIA SYMPOSIUM will take place in the most southern place in Spain, Tarifa, where our partner organisation is located since the end of 2017. Tarifa is located at the opposite side to Tanger in Morocco on the african continent.

International artists, students and art educators of all art disciplines are invited to exchange ideas in an active artistic dialogue. The aim is to investigate behaviors that shape from artistic processes out to their applicability in the real world. The detailed description and registration can be found in our PDF (540 KB) soon.

THE UTOPIA SERIE
How can we, acting as artists, intervene insocial and/or political processes? How can we create room for our intellectual approach in the area we are living outside. With the crisis in Europe  we will ask ourselves whether and how we develop utopias as art-creatives and if impulses for another perception will be able. Besides, not the results are primarily important but working actively together on a subject, exchanging ourselves, taking notice,…. etc.
These questions could be a starting point to create. We will also get to know places of the surroundings, getting to know artists living nearby, etc. . Starting points could also be special aspects of thesurrounding, Europe, tourism, sustainability…) as well as personal aspects (dreams, images of ideal places…) which the participant artists allow to kick with each other in the dialogue.

A piece for Clowns: Naughty or dangerous? Honestly!

Promotion by Aktion Mensch. Performance on May 12th

Roland Walter, inclusion ambassador, performer, and himself a person with spastic tetraplegia with athetoses, meets Barbara Duss, clown and theater pedagogue in 2017. Barbara has been active as a theater pedagogue for disabled persons and is involved in “clowns without borders” on the platform of the Theaterhaus Mitte, Berlin.
They are introduced to each other by a friend.  Soon after the introducting person has left, Roland Walter drives at high speed to the other side of the platform and a woman of the age of Barbara Duss dives after Roland. Ms. Duss follows the situation leisurely and says, finally arrived with her knee osteoarthritis at the other end of the platform: “It is not fitting for a gentleman, leaving two ladies on the platform and just driving away”. The answer of Roland Walter with scrutinizing look the two rather chubby women from bottom to top and a mischievous laugh: “I just wanted to train you”.
After this curious intruduction we decided to work together in a Clows  piece.

PLASTICITY


Project PlastiCity with Josefin and Lily Pöhlmann

The transcultural project PlastiCity is an interdisciplinary artistic workshop in cooperation with different medias: dance, theater and anthropology. The intertwining of these areas is a key aspect of cooperation in order to address the complexity of the issue.

We assume that the man-made physical structure of a city creates at the same time a social construction that creates specific living and behavioral spaces, which in turn affect man. The urban spaces, such as Parks, streets and squares offer a variety of experiences that vary according to their characteristics and accessibility. These spaces and constructions guide and influence our perception and thus determine the way in which we move and act in them.

Prospects 2018


In the last three years, things have changed a lot at art aspects and so the prospects for 2018 and the next years are under these new aspects: The projects on the Canary Island Lanzarote have been completed. Changing the EU’s programs and aligning the National Agencies has changed the requirement profiles. Artistic work is  not really supported by the National Agency in Bonn as an eligible further education, which is why the last applications ran into the void.Therefore these programs are no longer our priority. Therefore, we focus on projects and workshops in Berlin and Tarifa in southern Spain, where we have found new partners in the collaboration who want to combine with us elements of meditation and artistic work. More about this when the individual projects are fixed.


With Miss Stanhope and her project Lobilat, we are committed to her mission to make refugee children in Berlin and in the refugee camps a pleasure. Miss Stanhope travels to Lebanon with Lobilat and hundreds of fluffies several times a year, hosting artistic workshops there as well as in Berlin. With Roland Walter, we have had a project designer for some time now, who is heavily involved in the performance of the “Aktion Mensch” program in the field of performance with the emphasis on cooperation with disabled people. Roland is a person with spastic tetraplegia with athetosis, so severely handicapped. With his project MAMA 2012, Roland discovered his body as a means of expression and since then traveles around the world as a performer and inclusion ambassador. review to documenta14

In this rainy and much too cool summer we had good luck with the weather on our trip to documenta 14. Throughout the sunny days we spent the three days there and did not let ourselves be spoiled by the arbitrariness of the exhibits. Unfortunately we saw the criticism of most critics of art confirmed and were very disappointed by the exhibition as a whole. Really good, however, was the exchange with the other art aspects members and friends we met there.

LOBILAT_ongoing process

Lobilat is a project of our art aspects member Dinah, also known as Miss Stanhope.

In addition to visits of refugees in Lebanon, where more than 1 million Syrian refugees are currently living in camps,different kind of workshops are held in Berlin with refugees. Biennale Venedig

Biennale Venedig


After visiting New York with many museums and galleries as well as visiting the documenta 14 a month later, the last trip of this year is the visit of the Venice Biennale. From 31 September to 3 October, we will be concentrating on the Jardini and various places in the city this year. We very much hope that the Biennale will not be as disappointing as the documenta.
Also on this journey various actors of art aspects will get together and every interested person is welcome to join us. We meet on 1st October at 10 at the entrance of the Jardini.

The aim is to bring together within four days professional dancers as well as mixed-abled danceers and theater companies  and to develop a performative message together with the audience. The prerequisite here is the equitable artistic co-operation, which is determined by the different, individual abilities and possibilities of its participants.

In June, a group of art aspects members traveled to New York to explore the possibilities of an exhibition with local artists and to work towards a collaboration that fits within the context of the art aspects guidelines.
Together with the musician Susanne D, we planned a first project for 2018, in which we will use WORD TAPIR DAY with small drawings and paintings. YIP!
